Bought the small jar of inletting black from Brownell's in the mid '70's. Inletted a couple dozen rifle stocks, plus a bunch of other projects wanting a tolerance indicator. The jar is about 1/2 to 2/3 full and still very useable. Normally use a Q Tip to apply the blacking to barreled actions or whatever needs coating.

In the years since then I usually use Permatex non-drying Prussian blue (auto parts store) or a dry erase marker. The nice thing about the dry erase markers is that I can usually find a color that contrasts well with whatever wood I'm working with.

The way you fix this problem is to fill the gaps with epoxy mixed with wood dust. To prepare for the repair you need to prepare enough wood dust to fill half the gap. The best thing to do is select a piece of scrap wood cut off your stock blank and clamp it in a vise. Then use a Mill Bastard file to generate the proper size dust particles.
