It keeps the tube clean.im assuming that it’s live resin since it’s cresco. live resin burns at a much lower temperature than distillate and those 510 thread pens (the one in the pic) works best for heating it up distillate. those pens tend to be high voltage. it’s likely you just took too fat a hit and burned the cotton that the live resin soaks into
